Two years on from winning What Car?’s overall ‘Car of the Year’ award, the Kia EV6 is still seen by many as setting the standard for EVs in its class. The car has won the 2024 ‘Best Family Electric SUV’ award, ahead of several newcomers in an increasingly competitive segment.
The judges commented: “Two years after it was named What Car? Car of the Year, the Kia EV6 continues to blend a great battery range, fast charging, a fine ride and handling balance and generous equipment levels for a competitive price better than any rival. Plus, despite its sleek looks, it's a practical choice, offering loads of space in both the front and the rear, and a good-sized boot.”
The EV6 is priced from £45,275 on-the-road, and offers a driving range of up to 328 miles according to the WLTP ‘combined’ test cycle*. Drivers can choose between rear- or all-wheel drive models, as well as a high-performance EV6 GT model, which can accelerate from 0-to-62mph in just 3.5 seconds. Kia’s EV range has once again flexed its muscles at the Auto Trader New Car Awards 2023, bringing home two hard-fought accolades, including the award for overall ‘New Car of the Year’. The Kia Soul EV collected the award for ‘Best Value Electric Car’, while the ever-popular EV6 took home the title of Auto Trader’s ‘New Car of the Year’.
The Auto Trader New Car Awards are different from other car awards as the winners are not decided on by the opinions of industry insiders, but by the people whose opinion matters most: car owners. This year, over 220,000 UK car owners completed an online survey sharing exactly what they think of their car, with their thoughts and opinions (obtained from real-world experience) determining the winners of 20 of this year’s 23 award categories, including both of Kia’s award wins.
The Kia EV6 has continually impressed owners and reviewers alike since its launch in 2021 as it spearheaded the brand’s ‘Plan S’ strategy and new branding at the time. Kia EV6 named 2022 Car of the YearThe Kia EV6 has been named the 2022 Car of the Year in the prestigious Car of the Year (COTY) awards. The innovative all-electric crossover was voted the overall winner by a 59-strong jury consisting of highly respected motoring journalists from 22 European countries.
The Kia EV6 was initially listed for consideration for the top award alongside over sixty models that launched during 2021. In November, the COTY jury cut this long list down to a seven-strong shortlist, six of which were electric vehicles (EVs), further demonstrating the growing importance of electric vehicles to consumers.
The Kia EV6 received a total of 279 points to claim victory and be crowned 2022 Car of the Year, followed by the Renault Mégane E-Tech (265 points), Hyundai IONIQ 5 (261 points), Peugeot 308 (191 points), Škoda Enyaq iV (185 points), Ford Mustang Mach-E (150 points) and Cupra Born (144 points).

What Car? names Kia EV6 ‘Best Electric Large SUV’The Kia EV6 was named ‘Best Electric Large SUV’ by the influential publication, while the Soul EV won the ‘Best Electric Small SUV’ award. Kia UK Limited has picked up two category wins at the annual What Car? Electric Car Awards, with an award each for the Kia EV6 and the e-Niro.
The EV6 has won the ‘Readers’ choice’ award, a category in which the EV6 was voted the most exciting and highly anticipated upcoming EV by readers of What Car? magazine. The e-Niro earned the title of ‘Best electric small SUV’ for the second year running.
The awards demonstrate the changing landscape of the UK car market and recognise the best EVs on sale today.
The EV6 caught the eye of the public, with the What Car? judges saying: “This strikingly styled new model has captured the imagination of What Car? readers. It beat seven other contenders to win our online poll looking for the upcoming electric car that people are most excited about.” The judges also praised the flagship EV for its abundance of standard equipment, incredible charging capability, and customisable, personal interior.

What is the ZEV Mandate?
The Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate came into law on January 3, 2024. It is a government policy tool that requires car manufacturers to sell a certain percentage of electric vehicles each year. Its goal is to reduce the number of internal combustion engine (ICE) cars on the road in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from transport and help fight climate change.
The ZEV Mandate sets minimum annual targets, starting with a requirement for 22% of new cars sold in 2024 to be zero emission. This will rise each year up to 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain to be zero emission by 2030, and 100% by 2035, although Kia already plan to reach 100% sooner.
