What is a Hybrid Car?

Hybrid cars (HEV) are often referred as self-charging hybrid cars. They combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery to power the car. A Hybrid electric vehicle can't be plugged in to charge. Instead, the battery charges in decelerating, stopping or coasting phases.

How do Hybrid cars work?

It's simple really. Along with a petrol or diesel engine, hybrid cars (HEV) have an electric motor powered by a small but effective battery. The electric motor in a hybrid electric vehicle assists the engine for improved fuel efficiency.

What's it like to drive a Hybrid car?

A hybrid drives like a traditional combustion engine car but with a few bonuses. It’s a lot quieter for a start and you systematically benefit from the convenience of clutch-less drive with either an automatic or dual-clutch auto transmission.

What are E-Hybrid cars?

What is the overall cost of running an Electric Car?

Although there is no longer a government grant for electric cars the fact remains that cost of running an electric car is reasonable. Electric cars can benefit from a range of savings - for instance on access to city centres like Central London, or on parking. Providing you have the right electricity tariff at home or charge at affordable public station, their electricity cost will also come out cheaper than fuel.

Do Electric car charging points cost vary by location?

Yes, the electric car charging cost varies depending on the electric vehicle charging station. Fortunately, unlike other electric cars, a Kia electric car boasts access to Kia Charge, which provides all electric charging points' details, including operator, connector type, power and pricing.

Do Electric cars pay tax?

If your Electric car is fully battery powered, there is no electric car tax to pay as excise duty for the 2023/2024 tax year.

How far can Hyundai Hybrid cars travel on battery power alone?

Whilst the hybrid is able to run on electric power for short time periods as it is designed primarily to assist the combustion engine, it’s only the Plug-in Hybrid that can sustain a longer distance in electric mode only. Thanks to the larger capacity battery the IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid can travel up to 39 miles from a full charge.

Can the battery be recycled?

Every Hyundai is built with consideration for what happens at the end of its life. Hyundai Motor UK Ltd have partnered with Umicore Battery Recycling to facilitate the recycling process of high voltage batteries used in our Hybrid models.

What does self-charging Hybrid mean?

You might have heard the term self-charging hybrid, but what does this mean? Putting it very simply, a self-charging hybrid works in exactly the same way as a conventional car with no cables to plug in. The technology uses a normal petrol engine, an electric motor and a high voltage battery. The electric motor works with the petrol engine to enhance performance whilst reducing co2 emissions and improving fuel consumption. The battery is recharged by a combination of the engine and through recovering energy which would otherwise be lost (such as when slowing down) or by regenerative braking. The IONIQ Hybrid and Kona Hybrid – can be classed as self-charging hybrids.

Why is it more cost effective to run an electric car?

Dependent on the type of journeys you do, an electric car is cheap to recharge compared to filling the fuel tank on a combustion engine powered car, especially if you can benefit from cheaper overnight electricity tariffs. Low BIK rates for business users also make electric cars a cost effective option.

How does the maintenance of an electric car differ from that of a combustion engine car?

As there are less moving parts than a combustion engine, the servicing schedule doesn’t include aspects such as oil changes, and due to regenerative braking there is often less wear imposed on the brake pads and discs.

What factors could affect the range of an electric car?

Similar to a combustion engine car which can have fuel economy affected by different factors, an electric car is the same. Outside temperature, number of passengers or luggage in the car, driving style, and load on the battery from aspects such as heated seats, or air conditioning can alter the driving range that can be achieved.

Where are the charging point locations to charge a Hyundai electric car?

In the UK there are now more public charging point locations than there are petrol stations. The infrastructure is constantly expanding, and is updated via the satellite navigation system within each Hyundai.
